UK to host 2016 European Outdoor Championships

Archery GB, the governing body for archery in Great Britain, has won the bid to host the European Outdoor Championships in 2016.

Nottingham City Council and Nottingham University partnered UK Sport and Archery GB in putting forward the bid, and Nottingham will host the event for the first time. The qualification rounds will be held at Highfields Playing Fields at the University of Nottingham, and the head-to-head finals will move to the town centre and be held in the city’s Market Square. Archery GB has recently secured a deal with Nottingham City Council and sponsors to host the 2014 and 2015 National Series finals in the city.

Chief executive of Archery GB, David Sherratt, said, “We are thrilled to have won the bid. This year we successfully hosted the Archery GB National Series Final in Nottingham and will do so again in 2014 and 2015. This will be the perfect preparation for the European Championship in 2016.”

UK Sport supported the application to host the event as part of the Olympic and Paralympic legacy, as part of the Gold Event Series. The Gold Event Series aims to help fund and support bringing over 70 major sporting events to the UK between 2013 and 2019.  CEO of UK Sport, Liz Nichol, said, “We are delighted with GB Archery’s successful bid to stage the 2016 European Archery Championship. The event will give our athletes a chance to hone their skills, just before Rio 2016, in front of a home crowd in an iconic venue.”

The Championships will function as a continental qualifying tournament for Europe for the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and Helen Grant MP, Minister for Sport and Equalities said, “This is a real coup for Archery GB. It’s another major event secured as part of the legacy of London 2012 and will encourage more people to take up archery.”
